Who are we?
We are a volunteer group of divers providing assistance for underwater searches. We come from a wide range of backgrounds, some members are ex-Police search divers and others are very experienced commercial divers. Many of our volunteers are recreational divers who have undergone extra training. Some of our volunteers are recently qualified divers or don't dive at all, but there are lots of logistics involved in an underwater search and we welcome all offers of help.
What do we do?
We provide underwater searches in both the sea and inland sites (rivers, lakes, ponds). Our services are free of charge and can be requested by anyone. We come under the direction of the Isle of Man Civil Defence as one of their volunteer units helping to make the Isle of Man a safer place to live. We do not provide commercial search services.
How do we search?
It's much harder to look for something underwater than it is on the land. As well as the need for breathing equipment, how far you can see can be very limited - imagine trying to look through soup! Communication becomes difficult and keeping everyone safe is our primary concern. In order to deal with these issues, we train together, plan our searches carefully and make sure we use the right equipment for the task.
When do we meet?
Our Trustees meet every 3 months and the meetings are usually open to everyone. Notifications of meetings and training sessions are usually posted on our Facebook page.
